Commercial ice machines in Australia: output, price and GST

Across the 26 Australian supplier listings here, output runs from 20.5kg of ice a day to 572kg. The highest-rated benchtop machine we can price makes 20kg for $342.85. Between those two facts sits a tier where 12 of 26 supplier listings will not publish a price at all, and where the ones that do are not quoting on the same basis as each other. That is what this page records.

If you arrived here from "industrial ice maker", you probably want a bench machine. Every machine below needs a mains water inlet and a drain, which is a plumbing job and usually a commercial kitchen. If what you actually want is a large machine for a house, a party, a shed or a small cafe counter, start at the ice maker register instead, where the machines are a tenth of the price and fill from a jug.

Half of this tier will not tell you the price

14 of the 26 supplier listings publish a price. 12 do not, and the silence splits cleanly in two: 5 publish a recommended retail price and then send you to a quote form, and 7 publish no figure anywhere on the page. An RRP with a quote button tells you the order of magnitude. An enquiry button on its own does not.

Three patterns are worth naming, because they repeat across the whole category.

  • The manufacturer is silent and the reseller is not. Hoshizaki Australia publishes no price on either of its own product pages here, showing an enquiry button instead, while its reseller Snowmaster prices the same machines openly. The KM-40C-HC appears on both: $2,337 at Snowmaster, price on application from Hoshizaki. The two listings also disagree about the machine, at 838mm and 50kg on one against 988mm and 39kg on the other, and both are recorded here as published.
  • The cutoff is a size, and the supplier picks it. Coast Distributors, the exclusive Australian importer for Ice-O-Matic, publishes an ex GST recommended retail price on its two smallest machines, the UCG045A at $2,870 for 20.5kg per 24 hours and the UCG065A at $3,280 for 27kg. From the ICEU225 at 96kg upward, every Coast listing here reads contact us. The size at which a supplier stops publishing a price is itself the useful information: it marks where it stops selling a product and starts selling an installation.
  • The cutoff is not always about output. Sydney Commercial Kitchens prices Manitowoc units up to $10,869 ex GST for a 289kg modular cuber, then marks the RF0644 flaker at 231kg as quote only. That is a smaller machine at a higher barrier, so at that supplier the format matters more than the output. Flake machines have no consumer equivalent at all, which is part of why nothing in this cluster is monetised.

The published prices below are not comparable as they stand, because they are not all on the same GST basis. Of the 28 listings here, 8 publish a figure that includes GST, 8 publish one that excludes it, 3 never say which, 8 publish no figure to compare, and one publishes both bases on the same page. That last one is the Brema CB416A at Petra Equipment: a selling price of $3,674.88 including GST sits directly beside a recommended retail price of $4,176 excluding it, so even the discount on that single page is not what it appears to be.

We have not converted anything to a common basis, because silently adding or removing 10 per cent would make every number here uncheckable. The basis is recorded as a column in the register instead. Ten per cent is precisely the size of the gap people shop on in this category, so this is not a technicality.

The register

Every machine we could source, ordered by rated output. Bin capacity is published for only 11 of 28 listings, because most of the larger machines are modular heads sold without a bin at all: the Bromic IM0400FM-NR carries a $17,300 ex GST recommended retail price for the head, and its own listing puts a compatible bin at a further $2,650 to $4,790 ex GST on top.

One caution on the output column. Most suppliers here rate output at about 21 degrees air and 15 degrees water. The Manitowoc UD0240A is rated at 32 degrees air and 21 degrees water, which is hotter, more honest and not directly comparable with the rest of the column. Real output in an Australian kitchen in February will be below the rated figure for every machine on this list.

What the money actually buys

  • Cheapest published price: $2,337 for the Hoshizaki KM-40C-HC at 41kg per 24 hours from Snowmaster, which does not state whether that includes GST. The cheapest unambiguously GST-inclusive figure is $2,444.51 for the Scotsman ECM 47 AS OX at 24kg, and that listing was flagged as a clearance price when we checked it, so re-check it before relying on it.
  • Dearest published price: $11,508.35 including GST for the Scotsman DXN 207 AS, a combined ice and water dispenser making 82kg a day of the soft chewable ice the consumer market calls nugget. Worth holding next to the benchtop machines advertised as nugget that in fact make hollow bullets.
  • Scotsman, the most priced brand here: 8 listings through one supplier, every one of them with a published price including GST, running $2,444.51 to $11,508.35. If you want to see real numbers in this tier rather than quote forms, that is where they are.
  • Everything here is plumbed: 26 of 28 listings state a mains water inlet and a drain, and the one that does not simply never says either way. There is no tank-fed machine in this category. That single fact is the real border between this page and a countertop machine.

One listing reaches this tier through a consumer retailer rather than a commercial supplier: Appliances Online lists the Hoshizaki at not published, rated at 30kg per 24 hours. It is where the two markets touch, and its listing never states whether it needs a plumbed connection, which at that price is a substantial thing to leave out. See water and plumbing.

Why this page sells nothing

Commercial ice machines carry the highest advertising cost per click of anything covered on this site and there is no consumer affiliate program behind any of it. Nobody pays us to send a buyer to Snowmaster, Fletchers Supplies, Coast Distributors, Bromic or Sydney Commercial Kitchens. The page exists because these figures are scattered across eight supplier sites, half of them are not published at all, and the ones that are published are not on a common basis. Recording that is worth doing whether or not it earns anything.

Common questions

Why will commercial ice machine suppliers not publish a price?

Some of them will. Of the 26 supplier listings here, 14 publish a price and 12 do not, and the silence is patterned rather than random: 5 publish a recommended retail price and then route the sale through a quote, and 7 publish no figure at all. Suppliers price the small self-contained machines and quote the large modular ones, because a large machine is an installation job with a bin, a filter, a water connection and a drain rather than a product in a box. The output at which a supplier stops publishing tells you where it thinks that line falls.

Are commercial ice machine prices in Australia inc GST or ex GST?

Both, and that is the single most misleading thing about comparing them. In this register 8 listings publish a price including GST, 8 publish ex GST, and one listing, the Brema CB416A at Petra Equipment, quotes a selling price including GST alongside a recommended retail price excluding GST on the same page. We have not converted anything to a common basis, because the rule here is to publish what the supplier published. Check the basis on every listing before you compare two numbers, because a 10 per cent difference is exactly the size of the gaps people are shopping on.

What does a Hoshizaki ice maker cost in Australia?

Hoshizaki Australia publishes no price on any of its own product pages in this register; both carry an enquiry button instead. Its reseller Snowmaster prices the same machines openly, at $2,337 for the KM-40C-HC and $4,031 for the IM-65PE-25, and neither Snowmaster listing states its GST basis. A third route exists: Appliances Online lists the Hoshizaki IM30CNE25 at not published. If you want a Hoshizaki price, the manufacturer is the last place to look for it.

Do I need a commercial machine or a big benchtop one?

Almost everyone arriving from a search for an industrial ice maker wants a large benchtop machine. Every machine in this register needs a mains water inlet and a drain, which is the structural difference: a benchtop machine fills from a jug. The smallest machine an Australian commercial supplier lists here is rated at 20.5kg per 24 hours and publishes a recommended retail price of $2,870 excluding GST, against the highest-rated benchtop machine we can price at 20kg for $342.85. At the bottom of this tier you pay thousands more for very little extra ice, and the reason to do it is duty cycle, service support and a bin that holds ice at temperature, not output.
