The same physical machine sells for materially different money depending on which website you open, and nobody publishes that comparison. This page does: every ice maker we could price in Australia, with the price at each retailer that stocks it, the stated RRP where there is one, and the date every figure was checked.

The same machine, two prices

These units are matched on brand and model code, not on a similar-looking product name, because the names do not match. A retailer writes its own listing title, so the same chassis appears with a different colour word, a different capacity in the title and a different model suffix at each shop. That is precisely why the comparison is hard to do by hand and why nobody publishes it.

In absolute terms these gaps are small, because the machines are cheap. In proportional terms they are most of what a retailer makes on the unit, and they are free money to anyone who checks a second site before ordering. The useful habit is not to hunt for a sale, it is to search the model code rather than the product name.

The same effect, with a zero on the end

The same test applied to fridges with built-in ice makers produces much larger numbers, because the ticket is larger. 3 of those units are stocked by more than one retailer, and the widest gap on an identical model is $341, which is roughly 22 per cent of the cheaper price.

RRP is not a price

A recommended retail price is a suggestion from a supplier. It is not a regulated figure, it is not necessarily a price that was ever charged, and it is not the same claim as a "was" price. Of the 58 machines we sourced, 24 state an RRP at all, and 23 of those are currently listed below it. The largest stated reduction is 62 per cent, on the Wolstead Crystal Ice Sphere Maker 2.3kg at $300 against a stated $799.95, and 7 machines here are listed at 40 per cent or more below their stated RRP.

We have no price history, so we cannot say whether any of those RRPs was ever charged, and we are not suggesting any particular retailer has done anything improper. What we can do is test an RRP against what other shops are charging for the identical unit right now.

The practical rule is to ignore the crossed-out figure entirely and compare current prices across retailers, which is what the table below is arranged to let you do.

Sorted by what you actually pay, cheapest first. The RRP column is populated only where the listing states one, and "not published" means exactly that rather than zero. Note that 1 of these is not a bench machine at all: it was sourced from an ordinary consumer retail listing but is built-in or commercial hardware, and it is why the top of the range looks the way it does.

What the price does not tell you

Price is the easiest number in this category to find and the least useful on its own. A machine costs what it costs once; it then makes a certain amount of ice, uses a certain amount of power, makes a certain amount of noise and either survives past its warranty or does not.
