Self-cleaning ice makers

A self-cleaning cycle on a countertop ice maker pumps water through the machine and drains it. That is the whole feature. It is genuinely useful and it is not what most buyers think they are getting, because it does not descale, it does not sanitise, and it does not reach the surfaces that cause the smell people are trying to avoid.

How common is it. Of the 58 machines we sourced, 33 state a self-cleaning cycle, 2 state that they have none, and 23 do not mention it either way. Among the 35 listings that commit to an answer, that is 94% claiming the feature.

It is a rinse cycle

The mechanism is simple and worth knowing, because knowing it tells you exactly what to expect. You empty the ice, fill the reservoir with fresh water, hold the button, and the pump circulates that water around the same loop the machine normally freezes from: tank, pump, evaporator, return. After a few minutes it stops and you pull the drain plug.

What that achieves is real. It flushes loose sediment out of the water path, it clears residue after a descale better than a single ice cycle does, and it means you can empty the machine properly without dismantling anything. On a machine used weekly it is the difference between a water path that stays clear and one that silts up.

Three things it does not do

It does not descale. Limescale is calcium and magnesium bonded to the coldest metal in the machine. Removing it takes an acid in contact with the deposit for a stated time. Plain water at any temperature does not dissolve it, so a machine on a self-clean-only routine scales up at exactly the same rate as one that is never cleaned, and loses output the same way.

It does not sanitise. Nothing in the cycle kills anything. There is no detergent, no sanitiser and, on a countertop machine, no hot water. Manufacturers describe the cycle as cleaning rather than sanitising for that reason, and reading it as the second thing is a reasonable mistake to make from the button label alone.

It does not reach the reservoir walls. This is the one that matters. The musty smell in an ice maker is biofilm, and biofilm grows on wetted surfaces that sit still: the reservoir sides above the water line, the underside of the lid, the seals and the ice basket. The cycle moves water through a loop. Biofilm sits beside that loop, and a flush of clean water past it does not remove it. Someone who buys a self-cleaning machine believing it removes the need to clean the thing ends up with precisely the smell they were avoiding.

What actually removes each of those is set out in how to clean and descale an ice maker: an acid descale roughly monthly for the scale, a physical wipe of the reservoir and lid for the biofilm, and a full dry-out before the machine goes in a cupboard for winter. The self-clean button is a step inside that routine, not a replacement for it.

Which machines state the feature

Recorded from what each listing says, not from testing. A machine that does not mention it is recorded as not stated rather than as not having it, because retailer listings in this category routinely omit specifications the manual confirms.

Stated self-cleaning machines run from $74.85 to $699.99, so the feature spans the full width of the market rather than sitting at one end of it.

The 2 machines whose listings state there is no self-cleaning cycle are Devanti Portable Ice Maker Commercial Machine Ice Cube 2L Bar Countertop Black at $105.85 and Artusi Freestanding Ice Maker Black at $1,222. Note that price is not the pattern there, which is another reason not to treat the feature as a quality signal.

What to do with this

Treat self-cleaning as a convenience, not as a differentiator, and let the machine be chosen by something that varies. If two machines are otherwise equal and one has the cycle, take it; the drain-and-flush is easier than doing it by hand. But do not pay a premium for it, and do not let a listing that omits it rule a machine out, because 23 of the 58 listings we read say nothing about it at all.

The specifications that genuinely separate these machines are output and cycle time, in the ice output register, and what happens when one fails, in warranty and parts. Whichever one you buy, the maintenance is the same, and it is the maintenance rather than the button that decides whether the machine sees a third summer.

Common questions

Do self-cleaning ice makers still need cleaning?

Yes, and this is the single most expensive misunderstanding in the category. The cycle circulates water through the machine and drains it. It does not dissolve limescale, it does not sanitise, and it does not touch the reservoir walls and lid seals where the musty smell actually grows. A self-cleaning machine needs the same monthly descale and the same wipe-out as any other machine.

Does the self-clean cycle descale the machine?

No. Descaling is a chemical job: an acid, usually dilute white vinegar or citric acid at the strength the manual specifies, has to sit in contact with the mineral deposit and dissolve it. A cycle of plain water at whatever temperature the machine runs at cannot do that, however many times it repeats. If your machine has slowed down, it needs a descale and the self-clean button will not deliver one.

Is it worth paying more for a self-cleaning ice maker?

There is nothing to pay more for. Of the 35 machines in this dataset that state either way, 94 per cent state a self-cleaning cycle, and the cheapest of them is $74.85. It is close to a default feature at every price point, so it should not decide which machine you buy. Output, ice type, footprint and warranty all should.

Why does my self-cleaning ice maker still smell?

Almost always biofilm, which is a slimy bacterial layer that grows anywhere water sits still and warm. It forms on the reservoir walls, under the lid and around the seals, and none of those surfaces are in the water path the self-clean cycle flushes. Physically wiping those surfaces with warm soapy water, then drying the machine open, is the only thing that removes it.
